Worked on wifey's Toshiba laptop running Vista after I tried to "speed up" the thing and inadvertantly compressed all files. When you install Windows XP, it'll remove the bootmgr/BCD used by newer versions of Windows (Vista, 7, & 8) and use its own instead. Worked like a charm!
