I have installed all the Windows Updates on my system except for KB3035583 and haven't experienced the issue you are describing with the Windows Update icon. Whenever there were new updates available, Windows Update used to show its icon in Taskbar notification area (or system tray) to notify us about the new updates. Showing new updates notification at login screen is absolutely useless and removing Windows Update's notification icon from system tray makes the option to notify us about the new updates broken. I see no way to add the Windows Update icon to the Notification area (as shown in Merete's screenshot.) So I will be looking for the solution here. :) Googling comes The WU icon is there but has dropped to the bottom.
