The error GetCatVersion: Failed to retrieve version information from.... .CAT is also present in Gurgelmeyer's USP5. I also struggled for over a week trying to get XP SP3 installed (after downgrading my machine from Vista to XP). Parted Magic can browse the file system and delete any files from within it's GUI. I still tested them with nLite and Dutch XP, but of course (?) that didn't work... (Well, it kinda worked, but there were 2 errors). In my case, that meant not forcing SP3 on the os until windows updates thought it was ready for it.
A unique SP3 update package for WinFLP will be made available at download.microsoft.com. This is essential to know in order to patch the syssetup.dll (I've already found the offset). Setuperr.log "noticed" my syssetup.dll patch: Error: Setup detected that the system file named [C:\windows\system32\syssetup.dll] is not signed properly by Microsoft. http://realink.org/solved-xp/solved-xp-install-problem.html Probably it requires some debugging.

In front of the hex numbers that translate to SP4\i386\update\update.exe there is the number 20 00. UPDATE: An interesting observation: After installing SP4, the partmgr.sys driver is the only one which is signed. Came back some hours later to find "failed to install catalog files". Windows Update on the web feels extremely broken these days and half the time I can't even get it to work on a Windows XP machine so having an update pack Windows 98/98SE needed some tweaking with USB and software (KernelEx) and so forth.
