I don't know anything about Vista or the newest iPods. Now when i click music (next to where my ipod is in itunes 7) it says i have to delete all the songs to have them replaced. I have used exactly the same steps as you and can only get as far as having XP detect a removable storage device. Ok, not a step, but a confirmation of sorts.
