Kudos to the author of this tutorial. When Windows boots it will take a LONG time to get all the updated drivers - but hey, it booted, right? I think it's important to NOT attempt to run windows update before doing the above steps, as I did the first time and it wouldn't take. While there are reports of Windows 10 updating frequently, there are far fewer reports of issues where Windows Update does not quickly perform successful updates.

The systematic approach outlined on this page solved the update problem and allowed me to move on.

Windows Update started working as expected after installing the nine KB's listed here. I hope this helps others. Its only 181 megs out of 1.3TB, but just wanted to know if that is... After that i formated and installed windows 7 x64 on my SSD.
Replaced Socket 775 Mother board and CPU with Socket 1155. Reboot in Safe Mode, remove the "Connect automatically" feature for all wireless access points you have and disconnect from the one you're on.
