Now I can stop tearing my hair out! In the white bar type in explorer.exe and you will have your desktop back. I tried deleting the iconstreams and pasticonstreams and restarting explorer.exe. Only thing I can guess at is that the Explorer file was either corrupted or whatever and the system replaced it.
Each time I think the viruses are gone, but they come back. When I pressed ctl-alt-del and deleted the explorer folder and rebooted everything worked fine. And the registry looks different from Windows 7/8/8.1 so the old regedits won't work...
