Solved: Video Transfer From Sony Handycam Using Windows 7
Sony Camcorders have 4 pin iLink jack. I tried to reinstall version 4 and got the same Direct X error and, when run, keep getting "unknown error" message as well. I tried a few of my videos on another computer, and they played fine without requiring PMH. I have a customer with a Sony from Europe. http://realink.org/solved-video/solved-video-cam.html

My handycam saves the videos in .mts format. news I will certainly give your suggestion a try first. Depending on the availability of the iLINK jack or A/V jack in the Computer, you can transfer the videos. Windows Media Player may be able to playback the clips, but the playback may be choppy or out-of-sync.
