Much appreciated! In this situation, you can solve the problem by deleting all the currently downloaded updates and retrying. Done all steps here, Registry hack was strange as I didn't even had entry …/WindowsUpdate/AU at all. If the registry subkey does not exist, create the registry subkey.

Basically, whenever they tried to run a check for updates, they would get the following error message: Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. Reproduction of any content in part or full is not allowed without written permission.
