Windows still does not have the specific SATA comptible drivers installed at this point. After inserting the XP setup CD, it is unable to detect the presence of a hard disk. But if the drive can't even be seen, especially using a Linux machine to view it, the drive might well be physically damaged. Have an HP and only had an option to Disable SATA Native support from BIOS but it worked a treat.
