VOIP voice quality only exacerbates the problem. I am now worried though, because when I called to check on my laptop, they said they were now doing updates. In my experience, they work very well and I typically give them out to people who need protection. We move back to as few things as possible.

I'm not sure how to check if it's a heat issue, or what to do about it if it is. It's available for Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista.
I am not opposed to installing an alternative, like Pidgin, as a cop-out fix. Will let you know how it goes. It's also available for Windows XP and Windows Server.
